Golf

Well,

I went golfing with a buddy over Thanksgiving weekend.  I MADE PAR (on one hole)!!  Okay, so for some of you that is not a big deal, but it was great for me.  I shot a 118 (or 112 if you limit me to a triple boggie (sp?)).  I made par on a 3 par hole, but I also kept it to 1 or 2 over for the most part.  I guess the biggest change in my play was thinking about Skippy telling me when to break and slightly rotate my wrists.  I went from hitting a 175 max drive on the range to consistently hitting 225 straight on the range as well as consistently hitting my irons properly.  I moved from the ‘please just don’t hit the top’ phase of my game to the ‘how hard do I swing’ phase.  On the course, I had much better drives and hits with my irons.  Now, I have to work on putting.  (WHY WON’T YOU GO TO YOUR HOME?!  ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?!!!)

Sincerely,

Lawtonious Funk

Congrats, you are now in the "What the hell do I do now?" phase. Things won't go right, and you will start messing with your swing, then you will top the ball and it will go crazy places, and if you are really lucky, that slice and lack of distance that is nowladning 25 yrds further in the fairway will start hooking to the left. You have stepped up from "I suck and any good is a huge positive" to the I know I can do this but I can't do it, mind game level. Enjoy

A hook is a good sign you are overdoing something right. A slice is what everyone else has....or so people that hook tell me.

Here's my opinion, getting your first shot on/near the fairway is of great importance whether it is 150 yards or 350. You'll gain the most strokes by having a good short game. Good short irons, pitches, chips, and putts will help your game a lot more than pure distance off the tee.

At home I played against my dad and a distant uncle. I consistently outdrove them, often in/near the fairway. Still though, they were a lot better around the green. From 80-120 yards I sailed the green. From 80 in I shorted the green. Most of my pitches and chips were short. We all finished right around 104.

I always like seeing the really old guys who can only hit a drive 150-175 yards but nail it down the middle all the time. They string together short, but well aimed shots to shoot in the 80s or 90s.

"Drive for show, putt for dough."

Nobrainer hits it on the head with this one. The bad part is hitting the ball 170 yards towards the hole and it making a 90 into the woods/creek/pond/field. Then you don't have distance nor accuracy. One thing I try/tried doing for my own sanity and wallet was playing just irons if I am slicing off the tee with a wood. Don't get me wrong, I can sail a 3 iron into the drink with anyone, but having played with my fair share of old people, I've found that I the extra club or two on the second shot beats giving away a stroke. It's the short game that eats you up anyway as mentioned already. A duff in the sandtrap and three putts gets you to par just as easy as teh splash and drop 220 out.
