Kings Indeed

Rolling Stone magazine said in their last issue that ‘if you are a rock band and you’re not The White Stripes, it so sucks to be you.’ Well, I couldn’t disagree more. Not that the WS aren’t cool. I sampled their new album, ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ the other day. It’s cool and different, but it doesn’t rock the entire time. The Stripes may be making it big in the mainstream, but if you really want a straight rock CD you need ‘Aha Shake Heartbreak’ by the Kings of Leon.

Although I don’t like every song on the album, ‘Aha, Shake, Heartbreak,’ captures the essence of real rock ‘n roll. It’s a stripped back record where every note of every instrument counts and is heard as opposed to the glam/pop rock albums that use 3 guitars to play the same power cords in an effort to create a big sound and hide mistakes. KOL mistakes only give character to their unique rough rock sound. With syncopated rhythms and light distortion ‘Aha, Shake, Heartbreak’ is a throwback to the Stones early music a la Brown Sugar and Can’t Always Get What You Want. As for the songs, here’s a quick rundown of my favorite lyrics from each:

1. Slow Night, So Long “Rise and shine all you gold-digging mothers. Are you too good to tango with the poor poor boys?”

2. King of the Rodeo "He’s so the purity, a shaven and a mourning, and standing on a pigeon toe, in his disarray.”

3. Taper Jean Girl “I think he’s tasted, tasted the watcher.”

4. Pistol of Fire “Pistol of fire, shattered the frame.”

5. Milk “She saw my comb over, her hourglass body, She has problems with drinking milk and being school tardy.”

6. The Bucket "18, balding, star, Golden, fallen, heart”

7. Soft “I’d come in to your party, but I’m soft.”

(You know you’re in a rock band when you write a song about Whiskey d!ck.)

8. Razz “Sweet mutilation of a sold to nothing man.”

9. Day Old Blues “mad as hell give up”

10. Four Kicks “She a lovin’ on the boy from the city. I’ll be loving him under my shoe.”

11. Velvet Snow “Walking like your stuck in velvet snow.”

12. Rememo “This rememo is set for home. It’s personal but they need to know.”

Sincerely,

Lawtonious Funk

I hate the white stripes for one reason. That sorry excuse of a drummer they call the heroin addict behind the drums. She has no talent, I swear a monkey could play that well. Carter Beauford, now there is someone I respect for his percussive talents. F'n white stripes, I hate em.
