Radio Song

In middle school, I hated Tom Petty, Counting Crows (Okay, I liked them, but wouldn’t tell anyone-you know, like most closet Poison Fans), and REM. Man, did I hate REM. I still hate a couple of their radio songs, but the rest basically are great.

Well, I bought the Heartbreaker’s greatest hits in High School because I like MJ’s Last Dance. Since then, I realized the incredible folly in my opinion. I didn’t hate these bands . . . I hated their radio songs. I hate a lot of great bands radio songs. I think DMB is the worst offender. I have just about hated every first album release he has had. Let’s look at the list:

Under the Table, What would you Say (With John Popper from Blues Traveler) . . .total crap.

Crash, Too Much . . . Lazy writing, even for pop music

Before these…,Don’t Drink the water with Alanis, but not that bad.

Everyday, I did it, He ripped off one of his own songs!!!

Stand up, I never bought the CD. I might, though.

The point is, radio songs do not properly show talent. They are meant to sell the cd to stupid listeners. Good songs become radio songs by DJ’s overplaying the hell out of them. This is what I call the Matchbox 20 curse, and in middle school the Tom Petty curse.

The only way to really judge a band is to buy the CD or go the concert.

Sincerely,

Lawtonious “buy Blue Horizons Now” Funk

Agreed 110%. My rule with DMB was always, "If I can tolerate the first single, I'll love the album." I have found the same hold true with Counting Crows as well. My only concern now is how much music have I missed out on because I didn't care for the radio singles I heard?
