I spent the most of this past Saturday installing a garbage disposal. A perfect job would have lasted 2 to 3 hours. Here’s how mine went:
- The first line of the directions says to remove the old sink drain with a special note that penetrating lubricant may be needed to loosen the gear holding the drain in. This should have taken 10 minutes. Actual time-2.5 hours and a trip to the hardware store. The gear was stuck. I bought the correct tool and penetrating lubricant. The whole frame started to rotate. I pulled out my trusty bolt cutters that saved Brad and I when we rebuilt my boat trailer. I cut the whole drain out until I could cut the gear in half.
- Next, you install the new drain/disposal mount. Should take 2 minutes. Actual time 10 minutes due to slip ring popping loose.
- Wire the electrical line. Should take 10-30 minutes. Actual time 90 minutes and a trip to Lowes. Why? The jackass electrician that roughed in the cable didn’t make it long enough. I had to buy some extension cable. This added another splice. The dual splices came loose. I had to take things apart, turn off the power, adjust, turn on the power, check, repeat.
- Plumbing, 30 minutes. Actual time, 30 minutes of work with a trip to Lowe’s for parts. I’m fairly proud of the plumbing job. That can be a real hassle, but I snapped that crap together fast and right.
So, it’s been 2 days. The disposer hasn’t fallen of the mount. We don’t have any leaks, and the house hasn’t burnt down. 5 more days and I’m declaring success.
Sincerely,
Lawtonious Funk

DIY? I bet that would have cost $200 in labor for a plumber to do!
