Okay, I’m breaking this down into days so I can remember everything.
Sunday
We were in planes most of the day. When we got to the first Hotel in a small town outside of San Jose, it was much less than what we were expecting. There was not AC, nor any fans. We opened the window to let in a breeze and a swarm of various insects came it. It was still actually a pretty fun. The food was excellent and we were just staying there for one night to catch our flight the next day. When I paid, it seemed a lot more reasonable for what we got. Also, our service was excellent.
Monday
After a pretty sweet breakfast at the hotel we get to the Sansa regional Airport Terminal. It’s a freakin’ dump. Our airplane was a 12 seater a la Indiana Jones. The flight was actually relatively smooth and a lot of fun. We landed on a paved road and pulled up to the ‘terminal’ which was a porch that resembled something from a summer camp lodge. We took our taxi to Tamarindo Vista Villas and crossed a small river exiting the ‘airport.’ That was pretty funny. Cyndi made the driver stop so she could take a picture.
Our Hotel rocked. It was up on the side of the mountain so that you could see the ocean while swimming in the pool. Sweet. We swam in the pool, drank, and went to the ocean the first day.
Tuesday
We went to pool, beach, and downtown Tamarindo for some tourist shopping on Tuesday. The town was pretty cool and we bought some nice souvenirs. I got a nice ‘Pilsen’ shirt. It’s a beer there. Cyndi bought some jewelry. We bought a couple things for family etc.
Wednesday
This was the adventure day. We caught the 2 hour taxi ride to Buena Vista Lodge for the Canopy Tour, 420 meter Waterslide, horseback ride, and natural hot springs spa. The canopy tour was sweet. We went down 10 zip lines going from 10 to 25 mph on the line above most of the trees. The waterslide was freakin’ sweet. The water is mountain water (freezing cold). It so long you quit screaming because you lose the energy. The horseback ride was through a trail that was closed to walkers because it was too steep. I didn’t really enjoy this because my knees and back were killing me and my horse was a psycho. Cyndi loved it. The horse ride ended at the natural hot springs spa. We started off in a steam room. Then, got a mud bath, washed off, and went through a series of hot pools. After that, I was numb, which was great considering the painful horseride.
Thursday
We took it easy Thursday morning and recovered from the adventure day. Then, Thursday afternoon we took surfing lessons. That rocked. We managed to catch a few waves with some help of our teacher. And were spent fairly early leaving use time on our surf rental for Friday.
Friday
We tried to surf on our own with out someone pushing the board and yelling ‘stand up now.’ We caught a couple waves, but then they started getting big. I mean, really big. They were like 8 to 10 feet and we thankfully had learned how to roll under the waves holding onto the tip of the board. Well, one particularly large wave hit us and we rolled under. I distinctly remember being pulled out off the water while holding on to the top of my 9’6”. Okay, that was a little unnerving. Then, I look to my left. The girl to my left is washed down the shore and her board is broken. Cyndi, who was on my right, has had her line ripped off her leg and has also been washed in. The dude to her right had is line pull free and was already on the beach. After that, Cyndi was done. I rested and tried to catch a couple more. I caught a few and on my last one didn’t stand up because my arms were jelly. After the beating, Cyndi and I helped ourselves to the all inclusive bar.
Saturday
This was our last day in Tamarindo. We went snorkeling in the morning. Snorkeling was pretty cool. We didn’t see too many fish, but the boat ride was incredible. That night, we took the romantic wine and cheese sailing trip. We ended up on a boat with a group from Charleston. Weird. There wasn’t much wind. So, we drank- a lot, which was nice.
Sunday
We arrived early at the paved road that was the Tamarindo airport. Our flight came in on time and left on time. We landed safely. My odds of dying on a plane have increased.
We arranged for a driver to take us to our hotel and then to La Paz waterfall gardens.
La Pas has 5 waterfalls, a hummingbird garden, and a butterfly garden. We went to everything and also had a typical costa Rican meal. It was a great time considering the last day of our honeymoon Cyndi and I did something we did on our first date. Awwww.
Monday AKA Day of Hell
We left our hotel at 5:00 in the morning to catch our 7:30 flight. When we got there the AA line was the length of the entire airport. In other words, no flight today. We got in line and after an hour of shock someone came by and told us our flight had been delayed-FIVE HOURS. Our connection flight was with Delta. After 3 hours of waiting in line to reschedule our flight, we were told our flight would be changed to a Delta flight. That would knock out one of the plane rides cutting it down to 2. That’s nice. Then at 9:00 AM were told our flight doesn’t leave until 2PM and we have to wait in the delta line to get our tickets. Oh, delta is empty because they won’t be here until 11. Okay, we’re hungry and exhausted and have to wait 2 more hours to get into the food section of the airport. AHHHHH!!! They gave us vouchers for money from the ‘food court’ downstairs. We had greasy pizza and tried not to vomit. We finally got into the airport and it was chaos inside. We left-on time!!! And made our way to Atlanta. Upon arriving in Atlanta the pilot comes on and says that there are weather days and we may not be able to land for an hour. After a short panic attack, he gets back on and we land on time. Catch the flight out and get back to Cyndi’s parents to crash after making small talk. I guess one bad day of plane rides is getting off pretty easy, though. Considering the wonderful time we did have.
Sincerely,
Lawtonious Funk
